The Irish Water Spaniel
Irish Water Spaniels are an old hunting breed, dating back to at least the 1830's, with genetic links to Poodles, the Barbet, and the Portuguese Water Dog. They excel as close companions, performance dogs in dog sports, and show dogs in the conformation ring. They can do it all!
THE IRISH WATER SPANIEL
A well bred IWS is a dedicated retriever. They excel in retriever tests, but also do well in upland spaniel tests. They are very biddable, and zfd also highly intelligent, so require on-going training and mental and physical stimulation.
Irish Water Spaniels are a rare breed. While breeders are eager to find companion as well as performance/show homes for their puppies, they will want to make sure a Water Spaniel is the right fit for you. Make sure to ask questions, and be ready to answer theirs.
Dedicated breeders of Irish Water Spaniels exist across the United States. In the Puget Sound area of Washington state, we are lucky to have an active, welcoming club for the breed.
